Young people visit cultural construction sites to join the "I Have a Brick" observation and hands-on workshop

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Beginning in 2003, Hantec has planted seeds of friendly mutual aid through collaborative house building in Tannan, Nantou, in the 921 earthquake disaster area; in Belarus, in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster resettlement area; in Aceh, Indonesia, in the South Asia tsunami disaster area; in Namaxia, Kaohsiung; on Zhongshan Old Street in Daxi; and in Penghu, among other places. In the sweat of labor, energy saving, secure living and comfort have also sunk deep into bodily memory. All along, Hantec has used "building a house" as a way of communication, seeking opportunities for dialogue and renewal between traditional crafts and modern society; devoting itself to achieving healthy and comfortable green energy buildings in the preservation of cultural assets; and, through collaborative house building, using hands-on practice to carry out civic energy education and to practice the cultural work of dialogue between East and West and exchange between old and new.

In the summer of 2015, with funding from the Haoran Foundation—Alternative Globalization Program, six young people from Hantec walked into Germany's cultural building site—we hope that, with appropriate knowledge and skills, proceeding step by step in the correct way, on old houses, it is possible to practice energy saving, comfort, quietness, health and beauty.

This is a "observation and hands-on practice" workshop. In addition to sharing the composition of Germany's cultural building site and the attitude of "finding a way to solve problems," participants can also understand through hands-on practice: how to make the four hundred wooden pegs for building a house, and how natural building materials can make construction a social process that can be participated in.

Taking Yang Kui's essay "I Have a Brick" as the theme of the workshop, this is a salute to practicing ideas through positive action, and also an encouragement to ourselves. Casting a brick to attract jade, casting a brick also to attract bricks. Because with only one brick, you cannot build a church. We hope that the sharing of the cultural building site can inspire more concrete practice.
