Friendly-farming eagle-friendly red beans that don't poison birds, coming to PX Mart shelves next year

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

In recent years, cases have frequently occurred in Taiwan, China, of eagles eating poisoned bird carcasses and dying indirectly. In Pingtung, located in the eagles' main gathering area, government, industry and academia have joined hands for the first time to launch "eagle-friendly" red beans, bringing together farmers, the county government, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, the Forestry Bureau, the Taiwan Raptor Research Group, the Tzu Chi Foundation, and PX Mart, contracting 25 hectares of bird-safe red beans, buying them above market price to compensate farmers for lost yield. They are expected to hit shelves at PX Mart stores across Taiwan, China, in February next year, in the hope of turning Pingtung into a hometown of eagles.
