Located in Takasaki City, Gunma Prefecture, "Haruna Jumonji Seiniku" is a rare direct-sale pork shop. Every weekend and holiday, many customers from within Gunma Prefecture make the drive here specially; besides buying freshly slaughtered pork, they also take the opportunity to eat a bowl of the special "pork udon."

Pork udon is somewhat different from the commonly known Sanuki udon. The slightly curled flat noodles can hold more sauce, and the hot sauce packed with meat slices is full of the rich umami of bonito and pork, paired with finely shredded white scallion and fragrant, crispy thin burdock tempura, all for just 700 yen a bowl, very affordable.

What is unique is that almost all the ingredients used by this shop are local and produced in-house: "The udon uses wheat from Gunma, the pork is from our own pigs and our own butchering, and the burdock, scallion, ginger and other ingredients are also produced in our own farm, which is why we can offer them to customers at a favorable price." said Katsumi Yamagata, chairman of Haruna Jumonji Seiniku.
