Rural industry development urgently needs institutional support from local governments
Looking at local government action through Meinong white radish
After the tobacco industry declined, Meinong did not seem to wither because of it. Instead, over the past decade, we have seen a more vibrant agricultural economy. Just from the general production and marketing network alone, one can feel the impact of agricultural products produced and shipped out from Meinong on the overall local economy, let alone the White Radish Season event, which has the character of industrial cultural tourism. Media reports and the crowds entering Meinong during the production season to experience pulling radishes show how active Meinong is in rural industry.
During my doctoral studies, because of my field of study and my own interests, I had the good fortune to participate in these years of development under the framework of cooperation among local groups and the local farmers' association. Especially in the case of the Meinong White Radish Season, this industrial and cultural activity, over the course of these years we have seen the efforts of all sectors of the local community, including farmers, women, grassroots employees of the farmers' association, and cultural workers. Yet regrettably, we have also felt in this process that the actions of the local government often seemed to fall short of what was possible.
