Looking in the Mirror of South Korea: Post-Presidential Election Discussion on the Peasant Movement, School Lunches, and Cooperative Economy Workshops
After Park Geun-hye's impeachment, South Korean politics is undergoing a sweeping turnover of parties. The new president, Moon Jae-in, known as the "son of a North Korean defector," has repeatedly sent messages to Pyongyang, but what are his agricultural policies? Over the past decade, South Korea has raced to catch up in the game of global trade liberalization. How much impact has this had on the agricultural sector?
The Fubon Cultural and Educational Foundation's "School Food Ingredient Management Project" has for the first time invited Lee Jae-wook, director of the Korea Rural Economic Institute, Lee Bin-pa, head of the School Lunch Support Center in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, and Hansalim, South Korea's largest cooperative centered on farmers, to talk freely about the agricultural movement, school lunches and the cooperative economy.
Let us look to South Korea and learn from its experience abroad, to see how South Korean civil agricultural organizations respond to the challenges brought by globalization, and how, from the central government to local levels, they cooperate comprehensively to supply South Korean students with school lunches based mainly on local ingredients.
