General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Nestled below the Xueshan (Snow Mountain) Range, Neicheng enjoys abundant water sources and is surrounded by mountains; this superior environment makes its farmland ecology exceptionally rich. In this workshop we will take farmland ecological survey as our main focus, and further explore the interactive relationship between the organisms living in this shallow-mountain environment and human production activities.

Host:

Rihe Education Foundation

Co-organizers:

Original Flavor Grocery Store, Xueshanjiao Mountain Wilderness Studio

Target participants:

Teachers at all levels of school, friendly small farmers, and other workers promoting farmland ecological environments, 15 people in total.

Workshop topics:

1. The importance of intact farmland ecology

2. Basic survey methods for paddy field snails and bivalves, and aquatic insects

3. Basic survey methods for insects and invertebrates in dry fields (such as vegetable gardens)

4. Introduction to the concept of community-supported agriculture

Instructor introductions:
1.Lin Fangyi

Master's degree from the Institute of Zoology, National Taiwan University; PhD in Wildlife Conservation from Virginia Polytechnic Institutes and State University in the United States. Her specialty is research on the relationship between birds and habitat. She kept searching for an entry point outside the ivory tower of academia where she could make a substantive contribution to ecological conservation in Taiwan, and unexpectedly found her place after taking up farming. She is determined that for at least the next ten years she will, in the dual role of ecologist and friendly small farmer, combine ecology with agricultural techniques to find the possibility of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature in agriculture.

2.Chen Yihan

Graduated from the Department of Biology, National Sun Yat-sen University; Master's degree in Biology from Indiana State University in the United States. He has dabbled in everything from creatures that fly in the sky to those that swim in the sea, and is proficient in research on birds, earthworms and barnacles. Farming was never an option in his life plan, yet by chance he became a full-time farmer. He currently practices rice farming in Yilan using friendly cultivation methods, growing rice on an area of 1.5 jia. Throughout the growing process he uses no pesticides and no chemical fertilizers; while producing healthy, toxin-free grain, he also puts the concept of conserving the ecological environment into practice.
