Join Us for the Paddy Field and Stream Conservation Workshop

Through the three years of conservation experience at the Gongliao rice terraces, we hope to invite partners from different corners to join an informal, non-academic workshop exchange, then return to the communities they care about to observe and keep recording, so that together we can build environmental baseline values for different rivers and streams and different paddy fields.
Because we believe that the network linking paddy fields, irrigation channels and streams across the land not only nurtures the crops we depend on for food, but also gives rise to countless lives that coexist in the water. These lives and the water system weave a web that not only sustains each creature itself, but also affects the seafood we harvest from coastal waters, as well as the adaptation and costs of our future food production and water security. Yet the most wondrous thing about the land of Taiwan is its "rich variety": environmental conditions, and the life they nurture, differ from corner to corner, and each of these differences has its own irreplaceable way of working:
The whirligig beetles of the Hehe rice terraces will not necessarily appear in Yuanli, but this organic rice paddy in Yuanli will have its own creatures growing alongside it that can represent the health of this piece of land. So who are they? Fangjiao Creek has many gobies migrating back upstream, linking the flow of energy and nutrients from the ocean to the mountains. What about Nan'ao Creek? What kind of movement network do the fields and irrigation-drainage channels on both sides form for them?
These life stories flowing silently across the land used to be after-dinner talk among traditional farming households; now they await us to rediscover them. We imagine that in the Gongliao water environment conservation workshop, friends who love to walk and observe across the land can find something to learn from this case, then return to the land they know to observe and begin recording the current state and changes of life on the land. And don't forget to share with one another; perhaps together we can find directions that make the land richer, and share our actions in different corners.
8/13 (Tue) to 8/14 (Wed) for two days, let's get together by the water~~Online registration opens at noon12:00 on 7/8 (Mon). Please register through theHuman-Ecology Environment Ethics Development Foundation website registration system http://www.eeft.org.tw.
