When it comes to Guandimiao's specialty products, most people will surely answer in unison, "pineapple"; but 50 years ago, Guandimiao's specialty was actually "bamboo weaving craft." Guandimiao once relied on "rice, sugarcane, and bamboo shoots" as its main cash crops, and flourished for a time on handmade bamboo woven furniture; however, amid competition from Southeast Asia, industrial relocation, and the decline of agriculture, Guandimiao became a typical rural area suffering from outmigration and an aging population.

Natives of Xinguang Village, located on the outskirts of Guandimiao, could not bear to see their hometown decline day by day, so they organized a community development association in an attempt to revitalize the rural economy; and in the face of factional competition and clashes between old and new ideas, the community still did not forget to maintain its existing goals, continuing to promote integrated planning for production, life, and ecology, and strengthening welfare care for the elderly, striving to create genuine rural regeneration.

"Prosperity is but a dream": over half a century, Guandimiao went from a bamboo-weaving kingdom to a pineapple hometown

"The association has already achieved initial results in tourism and industry," but Wu Zongbao frowned slightly and said, "Recently there seem to be a few too many tourists," and a balance must be struck under the existing ecological burden. "Everything still has to proceed according to plan."

At present, the association has already cooperated with other nearby communities in Guandimiao and Longqi to form the "Back Garden Mountain Town Community Network," sharing rural regeneration experience together; next, the association hopes to transform into a "social enterprise," that is, to use all of the association's income for farmer feedback, lunches for the community's elderly, shuttle buses, and the association's personnel costs.

Because there are many elderly people living alone in the community, the association opened the "Hongli Cafeteria," so that elderly farmers can come out together to eat lunch and "banter a bit," appearing more lively; and the shuttle bus is meant to make it convenient for community residents to go to the market street to buy and sell agricultural products, or to seek medical treatment at a distance.
