Classic Good Rice Winner the Zhu Family: A Household of Rice Champions
Among this year's (2011) Top Ten Classic Good Rice winners, one pair of the youngest rice farmers, the Zhu siblings, stands out especially. The 31-year-old sister Zhu Lizhen represented the Dongshan Township Farmers' Association, while her 24-year-old brother Zhu Weixiang represented the Sanxing Area Farmers' Association, emerging from among 1,885 farming friends competing in township contests across 14 counties and cities and 58 townships.
Besides the brother and sister both winning awards this year, their mother Xiao Yue'e also represented the Dongshan Township Farmers' Association last year (2010) and received the Top Ten Classic Good Rice honor. The Zhu family won awards representing Yilan County for two consecutive years, and the true behind-the-scenes contributor, the head of the Zhu household, Zhu Kunzong, was grinning from ear to ear. They broke the myth behind the saying "a bad bamboo shoots a good sprout," using their award-winning results to prove the hard truth that "good varieties produce good rice."
Zhu Kunzong, now 60 years old and with more than 50 years of farming experience, came from a rice-farming family from a young age. He and Mother Zhu, Xiao Yue'e, spent more than 40 years together growing rice to make a living, raising the Zhu siblings to adulthood and through their schooling, and are about to welcome the major life event of eldest daughter Zhu Lizhen's wedding, with joy written all over their faces.
