Flax Quick Facts
Flax, also known as sesame, oil sesame, or black sesame, originated in India and was later introduced to China, Southeast Asia and other countries. Because of its high oil content, fragrant aroma, and richness in protein, minerals and unsaturated fatty acids, it is a cooking oil that people love to use; however, since its smoke point is 177 degrees Celsius, it is more suitable for low-temperature stir-frying and cold dishes.
Taiwan once widely planted flax in the 1960s, with an area reaching 8800 hectares; but times have changed, and currently more than 90% of flax products on the market are made from imported flax; domestic flax is only grown in the Shanhua, Anding and Xigang areas of Tainan, reaching 1908 hectares, accounting for 89% of the national area. Among the 3 townships, Xigang is the largest at 500 hectares, and can truly be called the "hometown of flax".
