Dead pig in Yilan not African swine fever
Yesterday, a dead pig was found on the beach near the mouth of the Lanyang River in Wujie Township, Yilan County. After receiving the report, the local animal disease control center immediately sent personnel to investigate. Huang Jiahong, head of the Third Section of the Yilan County Animal Disease Control Center, said that it was preliminarily ruled out that the pig was an African swine fever pig drifting over from China.
Huang pointed out that the dead pig had been dead for about two days, and its appearance differed from the characteristics of African swine fever. "Pigs that die of African swine fever show bleeding and redness of the body, and the spleen becomes enlarged, but the dead pig at the scene did not." In addition, the dead pig was of the white pig breed widely raised in Taiwan, which differs from the main breeds raised in China. Nevertheless, to be safe, samples were taken from the dead pig and sent to the Animal Health Research Institute for testing, and the carcass was packed in sealed bags, transported back to the animal disease control center, and incinerated.
The test results came out this morning (the 20th). Xu Rongbin, head of the Animal Disease Control Division of the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine, said that the African swine fever virus nucleic acid in the dead pig tested negative, confirming that it was not a pig infected with African swine fever. However, there are no pig farms within a 3-kilometer radius of the area, and where the dead pig came from is still under investigation. The site where it was found has already been disinfected by the Yilan County Animal Disease Control Center.
