African Swine Fever Zone Expands to Tibet, Taiwan Denied Participation in OIE Conference in China

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

African swine fever is spreading rapidly around the world, and Cambodia also saw an outbreak on the 3rd, becoming the fourth country or region in Asia with an outbreak after Mongolia, China and Vietnam; and the Tibet and Xinjiang regions of mainland China have also fallen one after another, and at present only Hainan Island has yet to report an outbreak.

The international outbreak situation is critical, but the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), in its African swine fever expert meeting held in Beijing today and tomorrow, did not invite Taiwan to attend. In response, the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine expressed regret, but stressed that it will still engage in international exchange and cooperation through various channels. As for the OIE annual meeting held in France in May, Taiwan is a member and has already received an invitation, and will send Deputy Director-General Du Wenzhen to lead a delegation to attend. She said that she will use the opportunity to strengthen interaction with the OIE and discuss the swine fever outbreak.

In addition, Huang also pointed out that in the future, the effectiveness of China's disease prevention will be assessed from border monitoring data. Only if the positive detection rate of Chinese pork products falls below 1% can it be taken to mean that China has truly brought the outbreak under control.

Judging from the positive rates detected so far, in October of year 107 there was 1 case (0.6%), in November 2 cases (1.1%), in December 4 cases (2.2%), in January of year 108 11 cases (6.2%), in February 11 cases (8.0%), in March 5 cases (3.9%), and from April to now 2 cases have been detected. The detection rate is still very high, showing that there is an extremely high risk for travelers carrying pork products into the country from China.
