Bumper harvest of red quinoa: Pingtung's Lily Tribe grows it without pesticides for high nutrition
Yesterday (2/27) in the morning, at the Ali Tribe Activity Center in the Lily Tribe Park in Changzhi, Pingtung, nearly thirty farmers who grow red quinoa gathered. One of them, named Xu Donglin, had just finished weighing bag after bag of his red quinoa.
"Xu Donglin, the red quinoa you delivered weighs over one hundred kilograms, so we're giving you a deluxe portable gas stove." said Xie Zhenchang, founder of the Taiwan quinoa brand "Kele Gu," which contracts with the farmers. To reward the farmers' harvest volume, anyone over one hundred kilograms receives a gas stove.
"Of course! I farmed so seriously!" said the seventy-year-old Xu Donglin. No sooner had he spoken than he threw his arms open and gave Xie Zhenchang a hug. "You all are great. Everything I grow from now on, I'll sell all of it to you."
Including Xu Donglin, after all of the nearly thirty farmers weighed their crops, this season's red quinoa harvest came to one thousand five hundred kilograms, which the contract buyer Kele Gu purchased at a price of one hundred thirty yuan per kilogram. Recently, quite a lot of red quinoa is still to be harvested one after another, and a second round of purchasing is expected at the end of March. If the harvest volumes from these two rounds are counted together, this year's output is expected to possibly exceed three thousand kilograms.
