Food Safety and Agricultural Literacy Co-Learning Series: The Sorrow Behind Low Agricultural Prices

Facing the Challenge of Economic Liberalization

Regarding the possible low-price competition from imported pork, Zhang Shengzhe's farm already has its own way of coping:

1. The farm uses an all-in, all-out batch rearing management approach, allowing whole buildings of pens to be cleaned and disinfected to prevent the breeding of pathogens. Healthy pigs mean reduced medication, and costs naturally decline.

2. Applying to the Council of Agriculture's multi-innovation proposal for technology-based agricultural enterprises, proposing the "win-win platform using pigs to integrate agricultural products into a toxin-free farming method" plan and forming a cross-industry alliance with fellow trainees from the same cohort of the NTU EMBA program to add safe agricultural odd-lot products (carrots, enoki mushrooms, etc.) to the feed, solving the problem of finding an outlet for out-of-spec products, while also increasing the flavor of the pigs, and having National Chung Hsing University use scientific methods to test the meat and confirm that the antioxidant properties of the pork are indeed increased, as well as testing the pork for pesticide residues to verify the safety of the agricultural products, achieving a win-win result

3. Setting up eco-friendly pig toilets to reduce water usage and eliminate the smell of manure, in line with environmental protection concepts.

4. Various production certifications have already been obtained to ensure meat safety.

5. In the future, the goal is to achieve customized rearing and produce the specialty meat products that customers need.

Now the farm has begun seeking sales channels externally and plans to establish its own brand for sales, but slaughtering, cutting, packaging, storage, and distribution will again be a major test.
