Pre-orders for Nanshalü crispy plums have begun, the annual plum goodness arrives
After a year of waiting, Nansalu crispy plums have entered their pre-order period again!
If you have never heard of Nansalu before, perhaps you should stop your mouse for a moment and read this article, and you will come to understand this Bunun settlement a little better.
The Nansalu tribe is located in Namaxia District, Kaohsiung City. Namaxia District is what everyone used to know as Sanmin Township. A few years ago it went through Typhoon Morakot, but in this ancestral homeland, made up mainly of Bunun and Kanakanavu people, most residents still live there, their feet on their own land, living each day earnestly.
"Home at Nansalu" is an online brand founded by the young people of the Nansalu tribe themselves. We have no physical storefront and no spare funds to promote this brand. Our promotional approach is very "of the land" and very "delicious": we choose green plums grown locally in Nansalu and hand-make them into crispy plums, so that the crisp bite of green plums picked at six-tenths ripe on the tree can be preserved. Open a jar, and what greets you is the earnestness of the tribe's mothers, along with our pride in our own product.
Quite a few people have asked why we chose crispy plums as the "limited-period product" of Home at Nansalu.
The ancestral homeland in Kaohsiung is an important production area for green plums in Taiwan, China, but over the past few decades, what farmers could do was only harvest the green plums and sell them to middlemen, or sell them to the farmers' association at a price that could hardly support a family's expenses. Because of this, in the tribe it is impossible to cover expenses just by growing plums and picking plums on a large scale; everyone has to take on other work and odd jobs.
There is no need to say much about the impact of the disaster on the tribe. Perhaps everyone can imagine the changes in our living environment by recalling the media reports at the time of the disaster, but what changed was the environment. If people's hearts can remain firm, the heart can also slowly recover just like the environment.
Nansalu crispy plums emerged on this premise. Last year, we started with our own family and discussed it with our mother, Maidar. She was willing to support our idea with her good craft, and our insistence on the product, along with the warmth of Maidar's hands, was conveyed to consumers through the product, so that all of last year's output sold out.
This year, we have begun to put into practice the goals we set last year. We have started trying to communicate with farmers willing to join our ranks, and the elders who watched us grow up are also willing to walk this path, which has only just started, together with us. On the producer's side, we are willing to buy green plums at a higher price than the farmers' association and middlemen, and at the same time communicate in advance about the production process, taking our path step by step.
Of course, we also know that after merely facing the land with a friendly attitude and negotiating cooperation with tribal farmers at a reasonable price, the income from making crispy plums cannot sustain each farmer's expenses for a year. But is that not what the path of change is like? Only by accumulating bit by bit can we exert our strength.
We will not talk about the disaster, and we will not talk about reconstruction. We only want to walk this path of change together with everyone. This year, our plum goodness invites you to experience it together.
