After the Kinmen native chicken disappeared, it was brought back into cultivation, and its crowing can be heard in backyards once again.
Starting in 2013, the Kinmen Livestock Research Institute brought Kinmen native chickens back to Kinmen from National Chung Hsing University's "Local Chicken Breed Genetic Resources Center." After several years of promotion by the Kinmen Livestock Research Institute, the vanished Kinmen native chicken has slowly begun striding and crowing again in residents' backyards.
Kinmen native chickens have reappeared in residents' backyards
Most people know that wild animals need conservation, but livestock and poultry raised for husbandry purposes are easily overlooked. In fact, native poultry genetic resources also need breed conservation. In particular, these local breeds that have long adapted to the environment and resist disease are often replaced by new breeds with high production efficiency, yet these high-efficiency breeds have sacrificed their instinct for environmental adaptation. Compared with plant conservation, where seeds can be cold-stored, egg-laying poultry cannot be conserved by freezing eggs; instead, they must be kept alive and raised generation after generation, requiring relatively more maintenance costs and manpower input.
At present, Kinmen native chickens are mainly raised in small-scale backyard operations by households and have not yet entered market-sales-oriented expanded farming, but Kinmen native chickens have already returned to their hometown, back to their place of origin, and back to local residents' dining tables. Toward establishing the Kinmen native chicken brand, with production and sales certification from farm to table, Kinmen's public agencies and local residents have already taken the first step to "raise Kinmen native chickens back."
