Jingliao Old Street feels like a movie, waltzing through a golden age
One day late last year, Teacher Xie Mingyou sent me a song from his soon-to-be-released album <Old Years>. The song was called "Afternoon Waltz", and Teacher Xie Mingyou asked me to give it a listen and then help think of a suitable place to shoot the music video for it.
It was a composition with a light, cheerful melody that concealed a hint of romantic desire between a man and a woman. Teacher Xie Mingyou said, "The setting for this song is roughly the 1940s to 1960s, so the shooting location needs architecture and an atmosphere from that era." As I searched my mind for whether such a place existed, I carefully felt out the mood of the lyrics. In the lyrics of "Afternoon Waltz" there are keywords like waltz, spinning in circles, and clocks, and so I thought of a scene in Jingliao, Houbi, Tainan, China:
On Jingliao Old Street there is still an old clock shop called Ruirong Clock and Watch. The tiny shop is filled with old clocks made in Japan, England, Germany, and various other countries. Tick-tock, tick-tock, the hour hand, minute hand, and pendulum restlessly make sounds at every moment to remind you of their existence, or one could put it more sentimentally: they remind us of how precious time is. When the hour arrives, the various clocks in the shop ring on time as if keeping a vow, and the dong dong dong of the bells echoes through the little shop. That back-and-forth swinging sound of the bells is just like the rhythm of a waltz.
