Interview with Awkeo (Jelly Fig) Expert Yu Qingjian: From Curious Beginner to Connoisseur

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

Under a deep blue sky, with bright sunshine and a cool breeze, the lush green plants and trees bring wave after wave of freshness to the muggy air around them. This is Huanan Community. Today, through an introduction by Director Liu Qingji of the Huanan Community association, we met the community's awkeo (jelly fig) expert, Brother Yu Qingjian.

From far off, we could see him bustling in and out of his awkeo field. After a brief round of introductions, we learned that the awkeo jelly served at Huanan Community events is all made from plants he grew himself. "Zi zai," as we usually call awkeo, grows from a seedling as thin as a toothpick into an awkeo tree now as thick as a baby's arm. He has grown awkeo for 19 years, and what he has poured into it is not only experience and knowledge, but also boundless patience and love.

Recently, Brother Yu Qingjian has been developing a new awkeo planting method, using coconut husk to conserve soil and water, and adding iron posts wrapped in netting as supports. He expects to establish the awkeo planting and harvest the fruit within two years. Watching the careful way he tends the awkeo seedlings, as if looking after his own children, I saw his passion and love for awkeo, just like the awkeo we eat, offering a marvelous taste that lingers endlessly.
