What is the connection between Luoshen, Toyota, and Wuwei Wu?
On a sunny winter afternoon, I happened to visit Fengtian Village in Hualien, my hometown, to call on Teacher Gu Yujun, who has been working on rural education here for many years.
I sat down to lunch with a room full of children: simply stir-fried cabbage, omelette with pickled radish, beans, pan-fried sausage, a bowl of clear corn soup, and Teacher Gu telling the story of years of collaboration with the community. It tasted especially sweet.
The sugarcane roof of Wuwei House. Fengtian was once one of Hualien's three major immigrant villages during the Japanese occupation era, and like Guangfu it was an important sugarcane-producing area, once home to the largest sugar factory in eastern Taiwan.
Some say roselle is the ruby of the East Rift Valley; to me, Wuwei House is more precious, and also warmer.
