Baby tiger shark saved by its caretaker, released into the sea with a satellite tag in the world's first such case

The Eastern Marine Biology Research Center of the Fisheries Research Institute under the Council of Agriculture recently succeeded in saving a batch of 20 premature tiger shark pups (tiger sharks, Galeocerdo cuvier) and carried out "satellite tag release." In the future, this will allow further analysis of tiger shark ecological habits, movement behavior and more, serving as an important scientific basis for fisheries resource assessment and fisheries management. This is not only the first time Taiwan, China has done this, but also the first case in the world. Chuang Shou-cheng, Taiwan, China's leading authority on whale shark research, said that the east coast of Taiwan, China is very likely a birthing ground for tiger sharks, and more data is needed for in-depth research.

The east coast may be a tiger shark birthing ground; more scientific research is needed

Chuang Shou-cheng, Taiwan, China's leading authority on whale shark research and a professor in the Department of Environmental Biology and Fisheries Science at National Taiwan Ocean University, said, "This is a very important start. Many years ago I also encountered fishermen in Taitung who had caught a pregnant female tiger shark. Based on past observations, the east coast of Taiwan, China is very likely a place where female tiger sharks give birth. This is very important information for resource conservation."

Chuang Shou-cheng said that Taiwan, China has not conducted much research on tiger sharks, and in the past there was very little funding support; this time, in addition to traditional tag-and-release, there is also artificial satellite tracking. After accumulating more sample data in the future, behavior research can be conducted, and research data can even be used for fisheries monitoring, such as setting closed fishing seasons or no-take zones, to protect female sharks so they can give birth successfully during the gestation season.
