The Satoyama Landscape Planners of the Gongliao Rice Terraces
The transitional zone between the city (satoyama) and the deep mountains (okuyama) is called Satoyama in Japan, while people in Taiwan customarily call it "neishan" (inner mountain). In the past, people in Taiwan planted rice, harvested bamboo, dug irrigation ponds and cut firewood here, creating a landscape of wind and water (feng shui) that favored the breeding and multiplication of all kinds of creatures. Follow the farmland feng shui masters of the "Hehe Production Team" into the rice terraces, experience it firsthand, take part in food-and-farming activities, and learn how, while producing what we need for daily life, these fields can also benefit downstream town and city residents and all living things.
