Anxin Foods Good Eats, founded and promoted by three seventh-graders
In recent years, food safety incidents have been reported frequently in Taiwan, China. Not only are consumers worried, but even office workers now put "safe food" at the top of their list of career considerations. Last year, three young people from the food industry, the electronics industry and the media quit their respective jobs and founded "Haoshizai - Anxin Honpo" together, recommending safe food directly to consumers.
Consumers have been scared by what they eat, and have instead forgotten what food originally tastes like
"Every item of food at Haoshizai is something we visited the factory for one by one, understood the production process, and then sent the product for testing before putting it on the shelf for sale," said Liu Yuling, founder of Haoshizai. Since its establishment in September last year, the company has been in contact with nearly ten food factories and farmers, and currently focuses on two products, fresh milk and siwu vinegar, mainly sold through online orders and corporate bulk purchases.
Liu Yuling believes that Taiwan, China has many manufacturers who make food with dedication, and "Haoshizai" exists to promote their products. "Let consumers experience once again the original flavor that food should have. We have to say, when you are used to food full of additives, going back to eating these good things really takes a bit of time to readjust."
Ye Weicheng, one of the founders of Haoshizai, was previously a factory director in the electronics industry, and had done procurement and sales. At Haoshizai he is responsible for opening up the market, often bringing products such as grass jelly, brown sugar or fresh milk to companies to promote bulk purchases. The question he encounters most often is: "The products you sell are tasty, sure, but why aren't they fragrant enough? Are they real?"
Ye Weicheng said that the products they sell are all local foods that do not contain too many additives, but most food on the market is chemically synthesized, so consumers have instead forgotten "what food originally tastes like." Take grass jelly as an example: ordinary consumers are used to grass jelly that is "very black, very fragrant and thick," so when they encounter grass jelly soup or grass jelly cubes boiled from pure grass jelly, they instead question whether it is real grass jelly.
Only by starting a business can the spirit of a conscientious purchaser be fully realized
How do you choose safe food manufacturers? Wu Zonghan, a founder of Haoshizai, has rich experience. He previously worked as a purchaser at a hotel, and encountered the plasticizer incident. Later he moved to a hand-shaken beverage shop as a purchaser, and encountered the maleic acid (toxic starch) incident. These incidents made him realize that food businesses that single-mindedly pursue the lowest cost are very common, but manufacturers willing to dig deeply into ingredient composition and sources are also not few.
Wu Zonghan believes that everyone in food procurement knows that the ingredients they buy are meant for people to eat, but under cost considerations, procurement options are limited, and manufacturers that value safe ingredients often cannot get orders. "I decided to start a business together with my partners because I want to carry forward the spirit of a conscientious purchaser and promote some of Taiwan, China's good food processing factories to consumers. And only by starting a business can the spirit of a conscientious purchaser be fully realized!"
