Food Safety Mom Zhang Mingli Steps Up, Using Her Candidacy to Clean Up the Political Swill Oil

At one in the afternoon, when we arrived at the office of Zhang Mingli, a Green Party candidate for city councilor in Qidu, Keelung, she was preparing lunch in the simple kitchen. Walking along Guangming Road from Qidu Railway Station, you can see the campaign posters of candidates from the other major parties hanging on high-rise buildings of a dozen or twenty stories, very eye-catching and visible from far away. Zhang Mingli's campaign poster is not low either, hung at the height of the second floor of this townhouse, and can only be seen once you are fairly close to the building.

The first floor where the interview took place has no air conditioning, relying entirely on ventilation and electric fans to adjust the perceived temperature. Out of consideration for budget and environmental protection, apart from the exhaust fan beside the main entrance, the entire interior is made of second-hand items or nailed together from recycled materials, including that blackboard wall filled with a week's schedule, and the wooden floor area where you have to take off your shoes is pieced together from bed boards; all of this was designed and made together with the help of Green Party partners.

The cooked food was brought to the table, including white rice, pickled plums and pickles, and fresh green loofah. Zhang Mingli said, "We know where all this food comes from!" Looking back, Zhang Mingli was once like most people, just eating whatever she ate and thinking nothing more of it. However, in 2011, her health showed a red warning sign, starting with mild bloating, then turning into abdominal swelling and pain, and later becoming so severe that she could not go to the toilet. Even stranger, the doctors all said she was not sick.
