Environmental groups urge a second extraordinary session to immediately schedule review of the Mining Act, to say goodbye to a battered land
Recently, Chi Po-lin, director of "Beyond Beauty: Taiwan from Above," tragically died, igniting public attention to mining, with many people joining petitions and taking to the streets to demand that Asia Cement's mining rights extension case be revoked as soon as possible. However, the crucial amendment of the Mining Act has been delayed from this legislative session until now. To push for mining reform, environmental groups held another press conference today, calling for the Mining Act amendment to be immediately placed on the agenda during the second extraordinary session given the high level of consensus, and asking the Executive Yuan to stop using the excuse of not having an official version to delay.
Citizen of the Earth: The Mining Act amendment has high social consensus; relevant agencies should stop delaying
Regarding the Mining Act amendment, Pan Cheng-cheng, a specialist at the Citizen of the Earth Foundation, pointed out that on June 25, more than 8,000 people took to the streets, walking with Truku people toward Ketagalan Boulevard and forming the shape of Taiwan, precisely to make the government see Taiwan and see public opinion; and according to a survey of letters of intent, more than half of the legislators support immediately scheduling review of the Mining Act amendment, representing a high level of consensus in both the social atmosphere and the Legislative Yuan, and therefore calling on relevant agencies to stop delaying.
