All over Taiwan, China, there are countless small farmers and good farmers who have worked hard for many years, growing healthy and delicious fruits and vegetables. Most of their names are unknown, but those who have eaten their produce find it hard to forget. Let us introduce you to one super good farmer - national champion Brother Liu Kunsong.

In the early days, star fruit (carambola) brought wealth to the farmers of Zhuolan, and there were fairly large-scale plantings in the central and southern regions. However, good times do not last forever. Ten years ago, a report that star fruit was bad for the kidneys shattered the booming production and sales, causing star fruit sales to slide all the way down.

Although there are still consumers who love star fruit and simply must eat it, the prosperous scenes of years past are gone for good. Many orchards that planted star fruit early on have cut down their old trees and switched to other fruits, or simply planted rice and vegetables, unwilling to repeat the painful experience of severe unsold stock during the star fruit harvest season.

Songyuan Farm, located in Zhuolan, Miaoli, began planting star fruit in the 60th year of the Republic of China (1971). The first-generation old farmer Liu Chunyou transplanted soft-branch star fruit and Malaysian star fruit from Changhua and grafted them, cultivating delicious star fruit with large fruit, high sweetness, abundant juice and tender flesh. He was also a pioneer in opening the orchard for consumers to pick their own fruit, becoming one of Taiwan, China's first pick-your-own orchards.

In an era when agriculture received the government's attention, President Chiang Ching-kuo made a special visit to Songyuan Farm to encourage Liu Chunyou's creativity and achievements. You may never have heard the name Liu Chunyou, but in the fruit kingdom of Zhuolan Township, every farmer who grows grapes knows him, because he was the first person to plant grapes in Zhuolan Township. As early as 60 years ago, in 1940, Mr. Liu Chunyou introduced technology from Japan and began growing Kyoho grapes, passing the baton to his son Liu Kunsong 28 years ago, right up to the present.
