Rice Field Feast held on December 9, cooking up the fragrance of the land
On Saturday, December 9, the couple Weng Kun-ming and Chiu Shu-yuan of "Jia Ba Mai" (Eat Your Fill of Wheat), together with Yeh Hsin-wen of "Wild-Release Life," continued to hold the "Rice Field Wild Banquet" in their friendly fields. This event still insisted on cooking over a wood fire, which best brings out the flavor of rice fragrance; the event also specially invited "Shanyuetao" (Mountain Shell Ginger) to use shell ginger combined with rice straw, natural materials, to guide everyone in weaving a "Shell Ginger Rice-Fragrance Pillow," a "Shell Ginger Handbag," and to make a pencil case by beating paper mulberry bark.
Now in its fourth year, for the team this event is a sharing of insights from each year's work on the land; especially in recent years, Jia Ba Mai has taken part in many markets from south to north, meeting many friends who value health and the environment, and being able to invite friends to the production area after the year-end second rice harvest to work and eat together is the best way to pass on and share the results of practicing friendly cultivation.
For "Jia Ba Mai" and "Wild-Release Life," providing good food is a gesture of care, but what they most want is to let everyone reconnect with the land. Every year when the event is held, the thoroughly free-ranging children and adults are the most beautiful scenery and memory of the event; through returning to the simple fare of coarse tea and plain rice in the fields, participants can more purely experience nature's gifts. This is also why, for every event, despite the large amount of time needed for preparation and the complicated, heavy work of moving equipment, they are still willing to keep going.
For this year's handmade experience, they specially invited Teacher Juan-juan of "Shanyuetao" to teach, with content including the "Shell Ginger Rice-Fragrance Pillow" combined with rice straw, as well as the "Shell Ginger Handbag" and the "Paper Mulberry Bark Pencil Case" made by beating paper mulberry bark. Shell ginger and paper mulberry are both common wild plants in Taiwan, China, and are especially easy to obtain, so they hope that through this experience everyone can better appreciate that the relationship between nature and life can be very close and intimate.
If you are free on December 9, come feel the north wind and sunlight of the Chianan Plain; every moment sitting on the land, you can actually feel the land's whisper.
