Making a Documentary: A Way of Getting Closer

The first time I visited The Hybrid Land farm was on a summer afternoon, extremely hot. I went into the field with the volunteers of that session; first we planted sweet potatoes, and later we poked our fingers into the soil to bury seeds. Because most of the volunteers, like me, had long lived in the city and knew nothing about farming, we kept looking at one another, afraid of doing it wrong. But standing on the freshly turned soil, I felt a kind of non-material joy.

Later the wind picked up and it gradually grew cooler, followed by a summer thunderstorm. At that time The Hybrid Land farm had only just begun, and there were not many crops in the fairly large field. I thought that if I could film the process of going from nothing to something as a documentary, then even if the work were unprofessional, it would still be my way of getting closer to this land that I so often stepped on yet so rarely came into contact with.

The film was shot in April and is currently in the post-production stage. Even as a student production, we must do our best rather than be slipshod, thinking that getting the meaning across is enough; I think that would let down every person and every blade of grass at The Hybrid Land farm.

The teaser, the fan page and the fundraising platform have already begun to promote it. It is expected to premiere in October 2013, and at that time we will also let everyone see the results of our efforts online, and screen it in various places. We also welcome your opinions and thoughts, and hope you will join in. I hope that after watching "The Hybrid Land", people can feel that on this land there are still many people doing things not merely for the present and their own interests, but so that more of our descendants can have a beautiful homeland.
