[Seeking Roots in Taiwan, Fulfilling a Dream of Homesickness] – The Japanese WomanChapter
This is15years ago, a story that happened in a village in Yuanli, Miaoli, Taiwan, China:
2001
While searching, she suddenly caught sight of the desolate, dilapidated dormitory cluster beside the elementary school, which made the woman stop and go no further. Gazing at the worn-out dormitories, she could not help but burst into tears. Her sorrowful weeping startled a passing elementary school student, who immediately rushed into the school office to report it, and a school nurse and a female teacher hurried over to find out what was going on.
What was going on with the "woman in strange clothes crying in the haunted house" that the students spoke of? And so, under the teacher's concerned questioning, a moving story of a Taiwan-born Japanese woman's homesickness was revealed
During the Japanese colonial period(around1942) was the Taiwan-born Japanese woman everyone had been looking for recently, and her father was a teacher at Jinguo National School beside the dormitory cluster.(Note: Jinguo National School was the old name of Shanjiao Elementary School during the Japanese colonial period)
To her father, this place was his hometown, his roots, and the memory he cherished most in his lifetime. When Taiwan was restored to China the woman was not yet2years old, and the following year she returned to Japan with her family. This bond with the land was something her father carried with him for a lifetime, yet the dream of returning home was a root-seeking dream he never had the chance to fulfill.
After waiting for50years, this woman finally returned to Taiwan. With great difficulty, she was about to fulfill her father's dying wish to return home, and she stepped onto this land full of expectation, only to see a desolate, ruined scene like a haunted house. She could not believe that the happy homeland her father had yearned for all his life was long gone!
She searched everywhere but could not find the hometown she loved most in her heart. Now unable to fulfill her dream, she could only carry another regret and leave with a heavy heart.
This previously unknown root-seeking story, under the attention of a female teacher in Shanjiao, was finally preserved, and what is surprising is that this whole event would become the start of Shanjiao community's15years of regeneration and transformation.
This Taiwan-born Japanese woman surely could not have believed that her simple dream of seeking her roots would actually set off the transformation and regeneration of a Taiwanese farming village, such influence such emotion, gratitude and thankfulness, we must surely seek it out…
The story is not overto be continued
