Sweet willow oranges, honey pomelos, and happy chickens grow together in the Lunsan Tribe of Hualien

Introduction to Lunshan Tribe

Lunshan Tribe is located on a gently sloping terrace at the northernmost edge of Zhuoxi Township in Hualien, at the junction of Ruisui and Yuli. In the earliest days, the Bunun people migrated here from Nantou; as the tribal population grew, they built long houses, each sheltering one extended family after another. The tribespeople call this land Duqpusan, Lunbu Mountain, meaning "the long place," telling of the land's origins; the "long house" became the symbol of the tribe and also tells the tribespeople of the liveliness and prosperity of days gone by.

Sweet liu oranges and honey pomelos that grow up alongside happy chickens

Walking into the orchards of Lunshan in Hualien, the first thing you see is surprisingly the happy chickens and happy ducks waddling along in flocks beneath the fruit trees. These chickens and ducks are the best helpers for tending the sweet liu oranges and honey pomelos. Ordinarily these happy chickens eat weeds and small insects in the orchard, and when fruit falls from the trees, that is their time to feast; by eating that fallen fruit, they save the farmers from a build-up of fruit flies. The droppings of the happy chickens also provide the best fertilizer for the soil and are the best source of protein.

The sweet liu orange orchard is just such a lively and natural place; the free-range rearing makes the chickens' and ducks' meat firm, and with their help the fruit that grows is also sweet. Right now is the season when sweet liu oranges are harvested, and we hope to share with you the fruit produced by this harmonious coexistence.

Introduction to Golden Honey Pomelo

The fruit grown in a natural, free-range way relies almost entirely on the natural power of the earth to bear heavy crops of sweet oranges. Ordinary farmers, when planting fruit trees, will carry out sweetening measures, applying fertilizer to the soil to make the harvested fruit sweeter; but if the soil is over-fertilized, it easily loses its natural fertility and also pollutes this environment. The farmers of Lunshan Tribe, with the indigenous character of respecting nature, tend these sweet oranges in an almost free-range way; the fruit that grows has all passed nature's screening and has absorbed nutrients by its own strength to grow, its pale yellow flesh carrying a faint, fresh sweetness.

A poor appearance brings no good price

Citrus grown under conventional farming methods uses systemic pesticides; once the pesticide dissolves in water, it is taken up by the roots, and as the water moves, the whole plant contains the pesticide, thereby preventing pests and diseases as the fruit grows. But only in this way can farmers guarantee that their oranges fetch a good price at the wholesale market and make a living.
To protect this land, the farmers of Lunshan resolutely decided to abandon the old ways and grow their fruit trees with organic management. But when it came to selling, they ran into their greatest test: with black spots on the peel, the fruit could only be sold at a low price on the market, and as the peak orange season arrived the price fell lower and lower, until eventually no one would even take them. They therefore hope to let more people know the story of these oranges, so that these sweet oranges grown naturally by the land can reach consumers' tables.
