A special guided tour of Apple Grandpa's visit to Taiwan, introducing you to natural farming
Written by / Jiang Huixian
Mr. Masanobu Kimura, a Japanese apple farmer known as "Grandpa Kimura" and "Apple Grandpa," visited Taiwan this week, from 9/26 to 9/28, giving lectures in the north, south and east and holding on-site field exchanges with farming friends.
Grandpa Kimura is regarded as a man who created a miracle. Thirty years ago, when conventional agriculture was still prevalent in Japan, he resolutely devoted himself to natural farming, tending his fruit trees with no pesticides and no fertiliser. From the first time he saw 7 apple blossoms to harvesting 2 apples, a full 10 years passed. How he persisted to the end and achieved results has inspired many farming friends to switch to non-toxic, natural cultivation.
This year, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization listed Mr. Kimura's natural farming cultivation method as an important agricultural practice, abbreviated as the A.K. method; this proves that this farming method already has applicability across regions, and has brought positive and significant changes to human farming, ecology and the environment.
In his lectures, Mr. Masanobu Kimura said many thought-provoking things. He reminded everyone to think: "What is the three-way relationship between the environment, diet and farming?" From soil, microorganisms, coexistence with insects and biodiversity, he encouraged and expressed his hope to everyone: "The 21st century is the era of using agriculture to repair the Earth; the 21st century is the era of agricultural revival and renaissance."
Let us read and think together: what changes does this future-oriented, friendly farming method, which emphasises "following nature, planting what suits the land, and letting crops bring out their own abilities," bring to our cultivation, ecology and environment!

Mr. Kimura's selfless sharing attitude and cheerful smile really are just like in the NHK film, and he easily infects others. His keen observation of field crops left the author Lin Yilong, himself a farmer practising no-fertiliser no-pesticide cultivation, feeling humbled, and reflecting that he should observe crops and the orchard environment even more carefully. Although the single day of September 27 was rushed and Mr. Kimura could not say all he had to say about his experience, the brief sharing still made the author feel the trip was worthwhile. Below is the author's written record of the two sharing sessions that day, in Tamsui and Yilan, for everyone's reference.
Special 5: Apple Grandpa in Tamsui: Happiness Farm, a grand exchange of farming techniques
"Apple Grandpa" Mr. Kimura made a special trip to Happiness Farm on Datun Mountain in Tamsui to hold an on-site field exchange with local farming friends. Huiwen wrote down a record of the scene to share with everyone. Mr. Kimura patiently demonstrated and explained one by one, from measuring soil temperature, to creating aerobic bacteria through rough tillage, to observing the correspondence between plant leaf vein patterns and roots, to plants' self-healing ability, to fruit tree pruning techniques… in just three short hours, local farming friends absorbed the essence of his more than 30 years of dedicated study of natural farming. And what he shared was not only technique, but also an attitude of life towards soil, the environment and farming.
Special 4: Apple Grandpa in Taiwan: Zhongpu, Chiayi, live on the spot
"Apple Grandpa" Mr. Masanobu Kimura's first lecture in Taiwan took place in Chiayi's Zhongpu Township, a major agricultural production county in Taiwan, where fruit production is the main activity. The author recorded on the spot this highly significant sharing by Mr. Masanobu. This year the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization listed Mr. Kimura's natural farming cultivation method as an important agricultural practice, abbreviated as the A.K. method; he reminded everyone to think: "What is the three-way relationship between the environment, diet and farming?" From soil, microorganisms, coexistence with insects and biodiversity, Mr. Kimura shared his valuable experience of more than thirty years of learning by doing, reminding and encouraging everyone: "The 21st century is the era of using agriculture to repair the Earth; the 21st century is the era of agricultural revival and renaissance."
Special 3: Learning that begins with "The Miracle Apple"
Huiwen of Happiness Farm wrote about her personal contact with "Apple Grandpa" Mr. Masanobu Kimura. She said that this Apple Grandpa who created a miracle does not merely emphasise technique; he believes that "technique comes only after the heart, and then follows along with it," and he further reminds us of the importance of things that cannot be seen on the surface. For example, everyone cares about whether the branches, leaves and fruit above ground are growing well, while neglecting what lies below ground, where there are twice as many roots (or even more). And the most important "root" of natural farming is not only the plant's roots, but also the state of the soil, this little-known microcosm of soil, in which living and non-living things depend closely on one another. What natural farming and Apple Grandpa teach us is worth savouring carefully by everyone.
Special 2: Happiness Farm: natural farming, our cultivation and our life
Mr. Masanobu Kimura, known as "Apple Grandpa," is an important promoter of natural farming, and visited Taiwan this week. Huiwen of Happiness Farm and her husband Li Xuying have been promoting natural farming in Taiwan for more than ten years, and they too have been deeply influenced by Mr. Kimura. This article interviews these two dream-builders about how they run Happiness Farm. They insist on natural farming, using no chemical pesticides or fertilisers at all, learning the rhythms of the solar terms and the workings of nature, growing and breathing together with the plants, and producing pure, healthy vegetables. Happiness Farm is also an educational farm, sharing the techniques and farming of natural farming with farming friends and members, so that consumers understand that choosing to support naturally cultivated crops is the opportunity for change.
Special 1: Apple Grandpa's miracle, and what natural farming teaches us
Mr. Masanobu Kimura, a Japanese apple farmer known as "Grandpa Kimura" and "Apple Grandpa," is regarded as a man who created a miracle. Thirty years ago, when conventional agriculture was still prevalent in Japan, he resolutely devoted himself to natural farming, tending his fruit trees with no pesticides and no fertiliser, and inspired many farming friends to switch to non-toxic, natural cultivation. Taiwan also has a group of farming friends who use Shumei natural cultivation, and the author Lin Yilong shared his own experience. He said: we have always believed that no-fertiliser no-pesticide cultivation is a correct path. Under this highest guiding principle, farmers must walk around often and observe diligently, to understand what help the crops need, so that they can bring out their own abilities and grow in nature. And such a growing environment is not only for crops, but also a paradise for wild flowers, wild grasses, all kinds of insects, snails, millipedes, spiders, lizards, snakes, birds and more. Besides feeding ourselves, we humans must also preserve a space for other living beings.
