Shushengfang: Delicious Vegetarian Food in the Alleys of Yongkang and Lishui Street Area
A while back I heard that a new vegetarian restaurant had opened in an alley near Wenzhou Park, so at noon on Sunday I went there with my classmates for a meal.
At the upper left is my curry stone pot rice. When my brother saw the photo yesterday, he even told me it was dried fish, hehe. The high heat of the stone pot cooks the vegetables, and there is some scorched crust at the bottom of the pot; that crust and the vegetables are so good together. The key to eating stone pot rice is that at the start you have to spend a bit of time mixing all the ingredients evenly; once it is mixed, you can dig in.
The two white bowls are the Dongpo rice bowl and the beef short rib rice bowl. Shushengfang keeps meat dish names on the menu, presumably to give some customers who cannot go straight to vegetarian food a few different choices. Unlike ordinary rice bowls, Shushengfang's rice bowls do not have the usual large amount of sauce; instead they have main dishes such as Dongpo pork (?) and beef short ribs, as well as stronger-flavored shredded burdock and pickled melon pork. The rice bowls look quite light, and I think they must taste light and not greasy too.
As for the tomato baked rice at the lower right, every time I see a gratin I think it looks so delicious, though you have to wait more than 20 minutes for it. By the time the rice arrived, I had already finished my stone pot. So if you want to eat a delicious gratin without waiting, remember to call ahead to order.
