Zhan Yating returns to farming without hesitation, simply because of her love for the land and her family

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

In the bloom of her twenties, the young Zhan Yating is sweating it out in the fields, farming alongside a group of aunts and mothers. Yating was once like many girls, an OL sitting at a desk in air-conditioned comfort, doing administrative work at a hospital, never exposed to wind or sun. But because the family farm was short-handed, and torn between work and family, Yating chose to put family first, quit her hospital job, and return home to help her father run the farm.

Having grown up playing in the fields since childhood, Yating has a deep affection for the land and is a standard farm kid. The family's "Taisheng Organic Farm" has been producing organic fruits and vegetables and GAP-certified pearl guavas since Minguo year 87, selling through organic stores, hypermarkets and its own official website. The farm has always suffered from a shortage of manpower. As a member of the family, Yating figured one more person means one more pair of hands, so in Minguo year 99 she left the hospital where she had worked long-term and came home to help with the farm's organic vegetable cultivation.

Besides attending farmer academy training courses, she also draws on her family's experience to learn and absorb knowledge about organic growing. Taisheng Farm is ISO 22000 certified and uses greenhouses suited to large-scale organic cultivation, reducing the impact of the external environment on the vegetables. It also ferments natural plant materials such as soybean meal, rice bran and bagasse to make its own organic compost, testing temperature daily and watching for the right moment to turn the compost, along with timely fallowing and rotation with leafy greens, to maintain soil condition and improve the land environment. It is not just about growing organic vegetables; they also hope to pass the organic philosophy and practices on to the next generation.
