100 Days of My Younger Brother Returning Home to Be a Rookie Farmer
Just getting started, and stably dating
Korean couples mark many days of dating, including 100 days, 200 days, and 300 days. Because there are so many of these days, apps have even been released to help busy friends remember their dating anniversaries.
It has been almost 100 days since my younger brother was stationed in Yunlin from Kaohsiung, and during this time he can also be said to be "stably dating" agriculture.
It all started with several LINE group chats.
Ever since returning to Yunlin, every day has been very tense, bewildering, wanting to do something yet not knowing what to do. I often tossed out whimsical ideas in a five-person group chat, constantly begging everyone to grow tomatoes. But it always came to nothing.
"Then I will go back and plant them first." My younger brother suddenly popped up with a message.
And then it began. We really started growing Jade Lady tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum 'Jade Lady'), two rookies.
Not flight attendants, and not engineers, just two kids in their twenties, and without much savings either. Just like that, one often rushed off to Meinong and started arranging trellises, nets, supplies, and seedlings, while the other started calculating costs and making a profit and loss statement. Even after working out the profit and loss statement and being so shocked that the two of us went silent for several seconds, we still braced ourselves and spent what was, for us, a "huge sum" to buy what needed to be bought and start being rookie farmers.
What was waiting for us was a greenhouse full of withered tomatoes XDD. This was only the first crisis, and of course, that is another story.
I have never been able to forget that after we laid out the trellises and tomato cloth, installed the water lines, and finished all the hardware, my younger brother said, "If we actually manage to grow them, that would be so moving." That was truly heartfelt, hahaha.
A rookie's original aspiration
During these 100 days, we faced our original aspiration, as well as the expectation of profit. Although the original aspiration is to attract more people to come back (such as our siblings), and there will be more possibilities. But the reality we have to face is that we need to make money in order to survive, and only then is it possible to attract more people. To give people a more fulfilling reason to come back and hold their heads high.
A beautiful dream does not have a better chance of realizing the original aspiration than step-by-step effort. In fact, the two complement each other.
A rookie farmer really does want to be a farmer who can make money. Because only in that way will there be more rookie farmers.
Although we do not know how things will turn out, we have started anyway. It is okay to be rookie farmers, because it is Jade Lady tomatoes!
