Along the slopes and grasslands of Taiwan's North Coast, Kinmen, and Matsu, spider lilies are commonly seen swaying alone in the autumn wind. The red spider lily season in Kinmen and Matsu has already begun; the red spider lily can be glimpsed on all five islands of Matsu's four townships, and Dongyin Island even has rose spider lilies and red-blue spider lilies. The golden spider lily season on the North Coast comes a little later, making its debut in late September and October.

Red spider lilies and golden spider lilies are native species of Taiwan. Their "flowers and leaves never meet": flowers bloom as leaves fall, and leaves sprout as flowers fade. It sounds sorrowful, and "separation" is their flower language. In Japan they are also called higanbana, carrying the meaning of guiding the living and the dead. Yet spider lily flowers are split and curled in shape and vivid in color: red spider lilies are red as fire; golden spider lilies yellow as gold; rose spider lilies and red-blue spider lilies even come in purplish red, pale purple, and pink, with a touch of blue at the petal tips, making them wild seasonal flowers with highly distinctive character in Taiwan.
