Mibaliu-brand sea rice hits the market: Fengbin's water terraces welcome a bountiful harvest
Carrying the traditional farming culture of the Amis people, the water terraces restored by the elderly farmers of the Port Tribe's water terrace restoration team have fulfilled their mission and delivered their first year's results. This sea rice, grown by the seaside, will be sold under the brand Milafu, which in the Amis language symbolizes mutual aid and cooperation.
This packaging was designed personally by Shumiruni, who commissioned the children of the Chunhui Ability Development Center of the Chung-Hua Foundation for Persons with Disabilities to make the burlap bags for the packaging, while the tribe's women hand-sewed each button and filled the bags stitch by stitch. From transplanting the seedlings, cultivating, harvesting, to the final small packages of rice, every bag is filled with happiness, love and meaning.
Shumiruni, the soul of the restoration team, said that the fact that the sea rice could go on the market represents the success of the water terrace restoration. During the process, the Forestry Bureau and the Hualien County Government assisted with the construction and clearing of irrigation channels, and the Hualien District Agricultural Research and Extension Station accompanied them all the way, from pre-planting soil environment analysis, variety assessment, cultivation guidance, and contacting agricultural machinery, to harvesting and milling, providing meticulous care and attention throughout. The Hualien Station also contacted the Guangfeng Township Farmers' Association to assist with drying and transport. With the help of all these units, the many difficulties encountered on the road to restoration were resolved one by one.
Following the success of the first generation of Milafu, the Hualien Station promised to continue guiding the Port Tribe's restoration team. In addition to planting a small area of glutinous rice in the second crop, they will also guide farmers during the gap between second crops to level the land evenly and to plant green manure to regulate soil fertility, so that the second generation of Milafu will surpass the first.
