Food and Agriculture Education Notes: Daguang Elementary School Starts from the Source of the Story

Teacher: "We have a papaya tree planted here too!"
Student: "The teacher is so cute!"
(Ed: Hmm? Is it the teacher who is cute, or the papaya tree?)
Teacher: "Later on, the papaya seedlings that grow in our pots, we will transplant them to every corner of the school and share them with everyone to eat, okay?"
Student: "Okay!"

Teacher Miaofei said: "My feeling over the years is that every year we experiment and every year we accumulate experience; farming changes a great deal, and the key is to adapt as circumstances change." The half year of vegetable garden work was something that a single one-off farming experience could never teach deeply, and it also opened the eyes of this city slicker. Although we could not, through the food and farming education at Daguang Elementary School, achieve our original aspiration of connecting producers and consumers and promoting the Satoyama Initiative. However, the understanding of food and land is something modern people lack. Life skills like cooking are also something everyone must learn, yet they are lacking in the current education system. The UK's "School Food Plan" has already set out to make cooking lessons a compulsory course for schoolchildren under 14, and it too was initiated by civil society, eventually leading to cooperation with the Department for Education to expand its implementation. Every scattered case can be strung into a line and gathered into a whole. In the future, besides continuing to promote campus vegetable gardens and guiding university students and children to learn together, we will also emulate UK food and farming education and incorporate cooking lessons into our course work. After we carry out the course in the future, we will share our story with everyone again. If you are interested in discussing it with us, you are also welcome to contact us at the FB fan page "Satoyama Satoumi Workshop."
