Xinnan Bird Day: Pedaling on an iron horse to watch birds and eat melons

On crisp autumn days when the sunshine feels warm and cozy, what is the best activity to do on the Lanyang Plain? It is birdwatching! The fallow paddy fields are as clear as a mirror, and many winter migratory birds come here one after another to feed and rest. Xinnan Leisure Agriculture Area in particular has a rich wetland ecology, adjacent to the estuaries of the Lanyang River, Yilan River and Dongshan River, where thousands of birds gather together, making for a rare sight. On the November 5 "Xinnan Bird Day" event, we will ride iron horses, weaving through the field paths of Xinnan, admiring the rich bird ecology, and also visiting traditional old houses to experience the rural life of poling rafts and milling rice.

The Renhe Environmental Ethics Development Foundation will hold the "Iron Horse Mini Journey - Xinnan Bird Day" event on November 5, 2016 (Saturday), co-organized with Tiandong Rice, which is committed to friendly farming and protecting bird habitats. Because of his love for bird ecology, person in charge Lin Zhe-an threw himself into the fields of Xinnan, hoping to use friendly farming methods to leave more complete and broader habitats for living creatures. This passionate young man will lead everyone on a bicycle tour of the paddy field scenery, using binoculars to admire Pacific golden plovers (Pluvialis fulva), little ringed plovers (Charadrius dubius), and common sandpipers (Actitis hypoleucos) pecking with their heads down, and even the sight of bean geese (Anser fabalis) and greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons) flapping their wings in flight. Through the experience of traditional rural life and tasting local melons, fruits and vegetables, let us listen together to the wonderful story of Tiandong Rice!

The general public who love the ecological environment and parent-child groups with children in second grade of elementary school or above are welcome to sign up. The original event fee is 1300 yuan, but after a subsidy from the environmental education fund, each participant only needs to pay 800 yuan. Those who bring their own bicycles can also deduct the rental fee of 150 yuan. The fee already includes a vegetarian health-preserving lunch, insurance and materials for the experiential activities. This event is limited to 30 people, and registration closes on 10/31.
