Looking for someone to farm, a piece of farmland seeking someone who knows how to farm

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

When we were transplanting rice seedlings earlier, the owner of Songshan Douhua sponsored two pots of snacks, so today I took over some bananas and vegetables for them. The owner hopes I will grow more roselle, as he wants to buy it to promote a beverage product. Later he also asked about lemons, saying the price of lemons had risen from 30 yuan per jin to 150 yuan, and he could hardly stand it. In the long run, food prices will inevitably follow energy prices upward, and even people who don't care about vegetable prices are increasingly feeling these fluctuations.

I had wanted to put out an e-newsletter to help more people understand this situation. Although the problem is urgent, I know that if I state my motives too quickly, I'm afraid it will scare many people off. After all, people today are already under great pressure in life, and if you then bring up a taxing subject like a food crisis, it really just makes people feel more powerless and become numb. Although everyone knows the problem exists and is serious, they all think it is a matter for the government and scientists -- what can we do about it? In fact it is exactly the opposite: the government and scientists simply cannot solve this problem. Only we ourselves can help ourselves.

Recently a friend in Qionglin wanted to provide a piece of land to practice Shu Mei Natural Farming, so I want to find people to join me in professional cultivation. Yet agriculture still gives the impression of being an industry that cannot make money, which makes people hesitate to move forward. Although we know agricultural products will certainly rise in price, no one is sure how much longer they must wait.

I cannot promise how long it will take to make money, just as I will not tie down the people I have trained once money is made. What I want to do is train talent. If you have the courage to take this risk, I can provide assistance with technique and sales. Once you can operate independently, it makes no difference whether we cooperate together or you start your own venture.

What concerns me is not whether money can be made, but what to do if there is no food. This is not certain to happen, but to say it is absolutely impossible is too romantic. The probability of it happening / the government's capacity to respond = how many resources we should invest to buy this insurance. Will the government properly take care of everyone then, or take care of people more important than us? If you are not confident about the answer, then try to protect yourself. Save seeds, protect farmland, have more producers, teach consumers to grow some things themselves. Growing vegetables in flower pots may seem like child's play, but when food can no longer be bought, people can turn parks into vegetable gardens to feed themselves. The more people have this ability, the more society can avoid sliding into uneasy unrest.

Although doing this seems to go beyond the realm of the "individual," the boundary between the individual and the whole is actually not as clear as one imagines. Buddhism says everyone has Buddha-nature, but I think no one can become a Buddha apart from all sentient beings, because all things are one. If the heart dies, how can the feet run? Practicing Shu Mei Natural Farming in a world where everyone has nothing to eat would be very boring.

Can Shu Mei Natural Farming feed that many people? But on that day, where would pesticides and fertilizers come from? Much of the compost people make themselves is waste derived from large-scale industrial production. When this system can no longer operate, won't there be only the grass and leaves on site left to use?

There is always a way to solve a problem. The earlier we begin to think and act, the more we can enjoy the joy that change brings. This problem is not necessarily a crisis; it is merely a reminder that we should properly face the real world.
