The Aogu Wetland Forest Park enjoys exceptional natural resources and scenery, and it also preserves the cultural traditions of the villages along the southwestern coast. Over the past three years, through promoting the mechanism of a sustainable-development ecotourism strategic alliance and the associated preparatory work, residents around Aogu Wetland are now ready to offer people a deep, high-quality travel experience.
Lai Peng-chih says that whether it is the winter migratory bird spectacle, the spring and summer emergence of the Formosan lesser horseshoe bat at dusk, year-round guided tours of the Port community, guided interpretation of early fishing gear, cultural experiences, DIY workshops and other itineraries, travelers can not only be moved by the natural beauty but also understand the characteristics of the Port culture, and put the idea of being friendly to the environment into practice during their journey, making travel especially meaningful.
"I originally had no interest in ecological conservation at all, and I even resented it. The fish are right there, but you can't catch them; they all have to be left for the birds to eat. But later I was moved by the enthusiasm of the mentoring organizations, and now everyone is throwing themselves into this together," says community interpreter Ting Chen-kuan.
Lai Peng-chih hopes that when people visit the Aogu Wetland Forest Park, besides birdwatching, they will also take the time to walk around the surrounding communities, give themselves an unforgettable ecological journey, and come to know the beauty that belongs to this land of Aogu in all four seasons.
