Homemakers United Cooperative Hosts Good Life Market and Picnic Poetry Concert
Facing a string of food safety scandals in 2014, how can people choose food they can trust? What can consumers do? On Saturday, November 8, the Homemakers United Cooperative will hold the "2014 Walking Together Cooperative Fair" at the Huashan Central Art and Culture Park, showcasing the life actions of a self-help consumer organization. With the theme "First Road, Way Out," the fair invites local producers, Wind and Daylight Records, friendly groups and member organizations to take part and share their practices for trustworthy ingredients and green living. Sister organizations from Japan and South Korea - the Seikatsu Club Consumers' Cooperative and the Happiness Center Cooperative - will also attend to exchange ideas with the public and share the cooperative experiences of their two countries.
The fair is divided into three main pillars: the "Good Life Market," the "Picnic Talks" and the "Picnic Poetry Concert." The "Good Life Market" has 54 booths in total, with 23 producers, 10 friendly groups, and the Homemakers United Cooperative's stations, member study groups and Japanese and Korean sister cooperatives taking part. Farmers bring their own quality local produce, and visitors to the market can also meet friendly groups face to face and learn about and support these groups that care about the land and local agriculture. At the same time, the Homemakers United Cooperative has set up a special "Special Edition Membership Orientation" so that people interested in joining can complete their membership on the spot and join the ranks of collective purchasing.
The Homemakers United Cooperative has never stopped pursuing food safety and healthy eating. For more than twenty years it has supported local products through the philosophy of the collective purchasing movement, actually using consumer power to change the world. The "Picnic Talks" invite producers who have worked with the cooperative for many years to speak face to face on four themes - "reducing nitrates," the "non-GMO movement," "fair trade" and "environmentally friendly," talking about their earliest stories and their years of persistence and effort.
In addition, the Homemakers United Cooperative is working with Wind and Daylight Records, which is dedicated to promoting original music from Taiwan, China. The "Picnic Poetry Concert" invites singers Lin Sheng-xiang and Panai, as well as the father-and-son duo Wu Sheng and Wu Chih-ning, to perform live, singing their love for the land through song. On an autumn afternoon, attendees can picnic with family and friends while listening to poetry and songs from the land of Taiwan, China.
Hsu Hsiu-chiao, chair of the Homemakers United Cooperative, said, "In 2013, the number of members of the Homemakers United Cooperative surpassed 50,000, which also represents the recognition and support of more than 50,000 families. In the future, we hope more young members will join us, working together for an environmentally friendly society and local agriculture, and pursuing the beautiful life vision of growing together, doing well together and aging together."
