Ugly Fruits and Vegetables Turned into Ice Pops: Carrefour Says 60% Fruit Content, Each Stick Reduces Food Waste by 48 Grams

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

"Many fruits get eliminated during the sorting process just because they are overripe, look unattractive, fail to meet standards... for many, many reasons." To give ugly fruits and vegetables a new life, major retailer Carrefour has teamed up with the social enterprise Lin Xiang Liang Shi to announce the official launch of "Ugly Fruit Sorbet," with a first wave offering three flavors - dragon fruit, pineapple, and banana milk - for a total of 12,000 sorbet ice pops.

Zhang Junhong, manager of Carrefour's Public Affairs Service Department for the Taipei North District, said that each stick sold will reduce food waste by 48 grams, and 2 yuan will be donated from each product to the Yunlin Food Bank, in the hope of carrying forward the spirit of food reuse.

Can Carrefour's Own "Surplus Fruits and Vegetables" Also Be Used? He Mozhen: The Concept Is Different

In addition, Carrefour supermarkets also produce surplus fruits and vegetables. Could these also be put into food-waste reprocessing? He Mozhen said these are two different concepts. Ugly Fruit Sorbet is meant to solve food waste at the production end, because many ugly fruits and vegetables are simply discarded at the production end for being non-compliant; reprocessing is meant to give these ugly fruits and vegetables a new life and bring them to market in a new form.

As for the surplus fruits and vegetables generated at Carrefour's sales end, Carrefour provides them to partner food banks and social welfare groups; otherwise, if these retail-end surplus fruits and vegetables were to be collected again and reprocessed, the cost would be too high.
