March is the right time for spring sowing, and Satoyama is busy planting rice and beans.
After the chilly winter, "Lichun" (the Beginning of Spring) has arrived in the blink of an eye. Following the footsteps of the solar terms, the satoyama households have already begun preparing the land and turning the soil, getting ready for spring plowing. The small field at Satoyama Juku will also have its land prepared and flooded before the Lunar New Year, waiting for the time after "Jingzhe" (Awakening of Insects) to plant rows of green seedlings.
To help more friends understand the rice we eat at all three meals every day and to give everyone more opportunities for close contact with the land,
and to cherish the hard-won gift of grain, Satoyama Juku invites everyone to come to Satoyama Juku after the New Year to sow rice and take a spring walk! Follow the farmer grandpa into the muddy field, hold green seedlings in your hands, and plant them carefully one by one, experiencing the toil of farming with your body and feeling the stories the land tells with every breath.
In March, besides being busy sowing rice, the satoyama farming households of Jiaopu are also preparing to sow soybean seeds. The ancients called beans "shu," and the Book of Songs writes: "In the sixth month they eat the sparrow plums and wild grapes, in the seventh month they cook mallows and beans," which tells everyone that in the seventh month beans can be cooked and eaten. So March is precisely the time to plant beans. We invite everyone to come to Satoyama Juku to "sow beans and taste beans" together, and also to gain a further understanding of genetically modified soybeans and the current state of soybean production in Taiwan, China!
The "Satoyama Rice Sowing" activity is held in two sessions. On 3/7 (Sat), group reservations open (groups must reach 30 people to proceed), and on 3/8 (Sun), individual visitor reservations open.
