The next phase of the plastic-reduction policy will officially take effect on New Year's Day next year. The number of regulated industries will expand from seven major categories to fourteen, and the provision of free plastic bags will be restricted in the future. Regarding the promotion of this policy, the Environmental Protection Administration pointed out that according to United Nations statistics, a truckload of garbage enters the ocean every 1 minute worldwide. If no action is taken, in 33 years the amount of ocean trash will exceed that of fish. Therefore, it hopes the public will endure the temporary inconvenience and jointly support the promotion of the plastic-reduction policy.

Bubble tea shops and drugstores may not provide free plastic bags

As this policy is set to take effect in half a year, Environmental Protection Administration Minister Lee Ying-yuan pointed out that the first phase of plastic reduction began in the 91st year of the Republic of China and has lasted fifteen years so far, regulating seven major categories and a total of 20,000 businesses to reduce plastic bag use. The second phase of the policy will further bring 80,000 businesses across Taiwan, China under regulation. For example, if people shop at bookstores, bubble tea shops or drugstores in the future, the stores will not be allowed to provide free plastic bags. It is estimated that this can reduce "1.5 billion" shopping plastic bags in one year.
