Joining the TPP: 60% of farmers are pessimistic about agriculture
It is worth noting that although many people working in agriculture do not understand the TPP, nearly 60% of both farmers and farmers' association staff believe that after joining the TPP, agriculture will worsen or fare poorly. They hope the government will strengthen marketing channels for agricultural products, stabilize agricultural prices, and promote local production and local consumption as response measures; 40% of farmers also hope the government will directly compensate for losses.
This survey was not made public online; detailed data require reference to the March issue of the Farmers' Training magazine. The Farmers' Training Association said there will be a series of forums afterward: in June, representatives from Japan and South Korea who took part in TPP negotiations will bring first-hand experience; in August, industry groups, farmers, scholars, and the Council of Agriculture will again be invited to reflect the opinions of farmers' and fishermen's associations.
