Lien Hwa Industrial Corporation, the largest flour importer in Taiwan, China, promised in September last year (2011) that it would help with the milling and sales of local Taiwanese wheat, and in March this year it opened a dedicated production line at its Yangmei plant to mill local wheat into flour.
Yesterday (the 23rd) at the national baking exhibition, Lien Hwa Industrial Corporation chairman Miao Feng-chiang said that Taiwan, China imports 1.1 million tonnes of wheat a year, of which about 20% is purchased by Lien Hwa. To raise the self-sufficiency rate for local wheat, Lien Hwa, besides helping with milling, also promised that "no matter how much Taiwanese wheat there is, we are willing to buy it all," and launched "New High Mountain Taiwan Wheat Flour," promoting it to the baking industry across Taiwan, China to increase the use of local wheat.
Shih Ming-huang of Hsiyuen Bakery, which promotes local wheat cultivation, said that from the first wheat crop in 2007, when it took two months of makeshift milling to produce 3 tonnes of flour, to today's results, he has seen a change in Taiwanese society's view of the value of agriculture, and also a change in corporate values, which moves him deeply. However, although Lien Hwa helps with the downstream processing and sales problem, the "animal release" practice popular in Taiwan, China has caused rampant bird damage in the fields, bringing farmers enormous losses. Farmer Chen Wen-lung of Yuanli, Miaoli, said he cultivates seven fen of land, and after last year's rain damage plus this year's bird damage, he harvested only 10 kg after deducting seed. If the bird damage problem cannot be improved, he worries farmers will be unable to keep investing in cultivation.

Farmer Chen Wen-lung of Yuanli harvested only 10 kg this year after deducting seed, but he still made a special trip north to take part in the New High Mountain flour launch event. Seeing the development of local wheat, he smiled happily, but he also did not forget to warn that if bird damage continues like this, he worries farmers may not be able to keep going (photo/Feng Hsiao-fei).
