Satoyama Initiative: 2013 Rural Vision Conference Explores Symbiosis Between Rural Communities and Nature

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

The term satoyama comes from Japan and refers to the dynamic mosaic landscape of ecosystems, habitats and land use formed by the long-standing interaction between people and nature, encompassing a mixed landscape of communities, forests, farmland and settlements. Since 2010, the Satoyama Initiative has become an internationally recognised important pathway for implementing the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The Satoyama Initiative is not only a strategy for biodiversity; it also breaks away from the traditional thinking of conservation as separation from and confrontation with communities, and further joins forces with citizens' groups, schools and residents. Through the introduction of citizen environmental activities, it achieves functions such as revitalisation of rural areas, higher food self-sufficiency rates, cyclical use of forest resources and environmental disaster prevention, echoing social welfare that pursues a balance among culture, ecology and aesthetics.

Now in its tenth edition, the Rural Vision Conference hopes to reflect together on the local meaning of satoyama in Taiwan, China through an understanding of the Satoyama Initiative and discussions of Japanese satoyama as well as domestic cases and institutions.
