Beihai Oils and Fats added 33 new downstream products, including Nomura's fresh fruit curry sauce, spicy hot pot base, and Italian meat sauce.
Beihai Oil and Fats Company is suspected of adulterating its products by mixing in non-food-grade feed oil to make lard products. Today the Food and Drug Administration announced its tally, adding 33 more downstream products to the list, mainly concentrated among Aiweixiang Foods Company and Nomura Foods Company, with each of the two companies accounting for 14 items. The items from Beihai Oil and Fats used by Aiweixiang Foods Company of New Taipei City include NU red sauce, white sauce and curry sauce, rich red sauce, white sauce and curry sauce, as well as Thai-style hot and sour sauce and Korean-style kimchi sauce.
Well-known frozen food manufacturer Nomura Company had multiple products affected, including 14 kinds such as fresh fruit curry sauce, spicy hot pot base (concentrated), braised lamb brisket, Thai-style coconut lamb brisket and Italian meat sauce.
Nomura Foods, which has obtained ISO22000 and HACCP certification, is the manufacturer of Taiwan, China's first Japanese-style gyudon prepared meal pack, and published "Food Safety Issues in the Eyes of a Food Business Operator" on its official website on September 25 this year, expressing the view that "for food, raw materials must be verified upon arrival, and finished products must be tested before they leave the factory."
Drawn into the Beihai Oil and Fats incident, Nomura Foods Company said it had already become alert after the Zhengyi oil products incident occurred in mid-September, and therefore since mid-September it had begun switching to products made with self-pressed lard. Ms. Xiao of Nomura Foods Company said that at the time they bought from the large distributor "Gourmet," not cheap oil products from an underground factory, and these oil products had all passed SGS testing and came with proof of origin, while "Gourmet" also had reports of passing testing from a Uni-President laboratory; they never expected problems to still arise in the end, and they expressed deep helplessness.
Nomura hopes that after the government has essentially swept all the oil products on the market, it can provide a list of edible oil products so that manufacturers know which ones can be used.
