Satoyama Juku invites you to experience citrus fragrance and dairy milk

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

"Satoyama Juku" invites everyone to come and explore "Satoyama Citrus Fragrance" and learn about "dairy farmers and milk"!

After training the staff who would take over operations for Organic Rice Farm, the Guanshu Education Foundation formally bid farewell to the management of "Organic Rice Farm" at the end of August 2011, embarking on a new journey to seek more diverse environmental education themes and directions. In November 2011, beside Jiaopu Elementary School in Jiaopu, Yuanli Township, we came across an old Catholic church filled with miscellaneous farm machinery. After planning, site preparation, and building repairs, this old Catholic church that we rented, along with the adjacent small field, became our new base for continuing to promote environmental education work, and "Satoyama Juku" was established. If all goes smoothly, "Satoyama Juku" will also become the Guanshu Foundation's permanent environmental education base.

Surrounded by hills, with homes scattered among them, layer upon layer of terraced fields separated by stacked cobblestones, reservoirs storing rainwater for irrigation, backup cobblestone-lined wells, and the winding Dapu River, naturally growing woodlands mixed with bamboo groves or cleared to make citrus orchards, and many wild animals also living among them… this mosaic landscape around "Satoyama Juku" is exactly the "satoyama" landscape defined in the United Nations' "Satoyama Initiative". We believe that in such an environment, we can certainly also find the wisdom of satoyama life and environmental management recognized as a "socio-ecological production landscape".

Here, in addition to the food and agriculture issues we will continue to follow, we will also uncover and organize the local wisdom of satoyama life and environmental management, and through diverse experiential activities, learn together with everyone to live in an environmentally friendly way, giving play to the positive power of consumers. Starting in September, we invite you to explore the industries around "Satoyama Juku" and seek out environmentally friendly people, things, and possibilities for the future of satoyama!

"Visiting Satoyama" Series Activity One: Satoyama Citrus Fragrance

Citrus is the main crop in the Jiaopu area of Yuanli. Starting from early autumn, the seasons for pomelo, red pomelo, white pomelo, imperial mandarin, and tankan mandarin will arrive one after another. We will take everyone to learn about these various citrus fruits, learn about the creatures in the citrus orchards, and, more importantly, meet the frontline farmers and hear about their joys and hardships. In the afternoon, we will take everyone to make citrus jam without food additives. For detailed activity information, please refer to the activity brochure.

To encourage more people to get close to satoyama and make the environment better through dietary choices, before the end of December, the Ministry of Education and the Guanshu Education Foundation project will subsidize the cost of 10 sessions of activities, at a special price of 400 yuan per person. The activity brochure and sessions are as follows (the time of the November activity session is to be determined). Discounted sessions are limited, so interested adults and children are welcome to sign up quickly, and self-organized groups are also welcome to sign up.
