What Hot Drinks to Have When Camping in Cold Weather? Camp Cooking 03

General News By Emily Carter 0 views

The ingredient theme the farmer gave us was mulberry jam.

When camping, besides spreading jam on toast for breakfast or making dessert cookies, what else can you do with it? My first instinct was just to mix it into juice for the kids to drink, but I also really wanted to make something that adults would love too, and that is how this mulled wine, a must-make on winter camping trips, came about! (Bingo) ^ ^

I remember that more than five years ago, during apple harvest season, we went camping at Fushoushan Farm. The temperature up in the mountains was around 8 degrees, and we used Lishan apples we had bought along the way to cook spiced mulled wine, thinking we would drink it hot and warm up fast.

The kids happily finished a cup and then said they wanted to go into the tent to sleep. The weather outside was really unbearably freezing. An hour later, we also planned to crawl into the tent, get into our sleeping bags and warm up. We turned on the light inside the sleeping tent, and only then did we discover that each of the kids was lying in their own vomit > <”

Sure enough, it was so tasty that they drank it too fast! We did not notice at all that the alcohol had not fully evaporated, and they went cup after cup….

Spiced mulled wine generally just uses leftover red wine, and in addition it needs many spices, including cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, nutmeg powder, orange peel and so on. For fruit, it uses orange flesh and juice plus chopped apple. This revised version of mulled wine is even simpler, because mulberry jam itself already contains a lot of sugar, so no extra sugar is needed, and you can slowly simmer it at home in advance, then keep it refrigerated (it can be stored for about a month). When you get to camp, you only need to heat it up to enjoy it, with no need to worry at all about running out of gas, or about the alcohol not fully evaporating XD

With today's once-in-a-decade cold snap arriving, a cup of sweet, delicious mulled wine is really just what you need!
