A mung bean product from Ri Zheng Company was found to have excessive pesticide residue. The Tainan Health Bureau conducted an inspection of the upstream company, Nian Guan Company, and has removed from shelves and sealed 52 tonnes of mung beans at the plant.

On the afternoon of May 8, 2015 (ROC year 104), the Tainan City Government Health Bureau received a notification from the Nantou County Health Bureau that the Nangang Plant of Ri Zheng Food Industrial Co., Ltd. in that county had conducted self-testing on three batches of the "mung beans" it sold, with expiry dates of July 8, 2016, August 1, 2016 and October 12, 2016 respectively, and detected excessive residues of the pesticides ethion and dimethoate, with an ethion residue of 0.04 ppm (residue standard 0.02 ppm) and a dimethoate residue of 0.17 ppm (residue standard 0.02 ppm).

These three batches of "mung beans" were purchased in 2015 (ROC year 104) from Nian Guan Co., Ltd. in Tainan City, in quantities of 3,900 kg, 2,460 kg and 3,360 kg respectively, totalling 9,720 kg.

Ri Zheng Company in Taichung made this mung beans into five product packaging specifications for sale on the market. These include "Da Gu Cang - mung beans 600g - horizontal (expiry date 08.07.2016)", "Xin - mung beans 350g (expiry dates 01.08.2016 and 13.10.2016)", "(Military) Nan - mung beans 350g (expiry dates 01.08.2016, 08.07.2016 and 12.10.2016)", and "mung bean powder 200g and ten-grain rice 1.5kg - Jia Fu (expiry date 09.02.2016)", among others. The Nantou Health Bureau has asked the operator to voluntarily recall and remove them from shelves.

Investigation found that this batch of "mung beans" held by Nian Guan Company was imported from Myanmar on June 16, 2014 (ROC year 103) and March 13, 2015 (ROC year 104), in quantities of 125 and 120 tonnes, totalling 245 tonnes. There were still 52 tonnes in stock at the plant, and the Health Bureau removed from shelves and sealed the 52 tonnes of mung beans at the plant. Nian Guan Company provided a self-test report showing that this batch of products passed pesticide testing, and the Health Bureau has sampled this batch of mung beans at the plant to test for pesticide residues in order to clarify the matter. It has also asked Nian Guan Company to complete the removal of the product from shelves by 12 noon on May 10 and to complete the recall from downstream manufacturers by May 20, and the Health Bureau will continue to track the downstream flow.
